Saturday talks:
Fiona Scott - ‘Fiddlers in Fairyland’ book reading 1.30pm Fiona Scott is the author of Fiddlers in Fairyland, a dual language book that retells a mysterious old Scottish folk tale, a tale about music, merriment and the inescapable passage of time. Fiona will be reading the tale in English – and a little Gaelic will be thrown in too. The reading (roughly 15mins) will be followed by a question and answer session with Fiona. |
Sunday talks:
Marie Fielding: Alternative Teaching Ideas 1.30pm
Fiddler, composer, examiner and lecturer Marie Fielding will be sharing her methods and ideas, all relating to the preparation and skills of performance. This will be a very open relaxed session, encouraging others to offer their thoughts, questions and experiences. Marie teaches Fiddle and Fiddle Performance at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, using various techniques, aiming to bring out the best in each individual musician. Suitable for any standard as we can all learn from one another. |
Mark Neal: Some Sound Advice 2.30pm
Dr Mark Neal is a musician and sound engineer who runs the recording studio and live sound company "The Sonic Lodge." He has over 20 years of experience in sound engineering both live and in the studio. This talk will cover the basics of amplifying and recording fiddles and other traditional instruments and will provide opportunity to ask questions. |
Sara Watkin: Musicians’ Health 3.30pm
Dr. Sara Watkin has been the school doctor for London Studio Centre, assistant to the extraordinary Cirque du Soleil physiotherapy team and Honorary Physician for the British Association of Performing Arts Medicine. Sara now works in the NHS as a speciality doctor in Child and Adolescent Mental Health and privately as an osteopath. Sara will explain pain, drawing upon everything from psychoanalytical theories about psyche-soma to neurophysiology and anatomy. She will think about why it is so hard for a fiddle player to balance what's best for their body with their passion (and bank balance). |
